Training Program

Because the work Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island does is so critical to the well-being of others, we provide a training program for all volunteers.

Our training is tailored to the area of volunteering that you choose. For example, all volunteers interested in direct patient care are required to attend a four-hour orientation and five hours of additional volunteer training. Our spiritual care, bereavement and Philip Hulitar Hospice Center volunteers also attend additional training sessions to better understand the needs of  patients who need this assistance. Each session is different -- spiritual training is six hours, bereavement is three hours and Philip Hulitar Hospice Center is two hours.

What Type of Training do Hospice Volunteers Receive?

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Orientation to the agency
  • Hospice mission/philosophy
  • Patient/family dynamics
  • Communication skills
  • Standard precautions
  • Role of hospice team
  • HIPAA compliance and confidentiality
  • Volunteer roles and documentation

Volunteer training sessions are offered regularly. For more information, please contact Deanna Upchurch, M.A., at (401) 415-4303.
