Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island Presents “Light Up A Life: A Time for Remembering”

Tree lightings in memory of lost loved ones, Dec. 6, Providence, & Dec. 8, Narragansett

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – “With the approaching holidays, our thoughts turn more and more toward family and loved ones, and for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one, the holiday season also becomes a time for traditions that celebrate the memory of those who no longer can share our lives,” says Diana Franchitto, president/CEO at Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, the state’s leader in hospice and palliative care since 1976.

This holiday season, Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island invites the public to its twenty-ninth annual “Light Up A Life: A Time for Remembering” free tree-lighting ceremonies on Dec. 6 in Providence and Dec. 8 in Narragansett to honor the memory and spirit of loved ones who have passed away.

Since 1989, when the Friends of Hospice organized the first “Light Up A Life” celebration in Providence, these memorial tree-lightings have become expressive events investing the holiday season with special meaning, according to Franchitto. Over the years, thousands of white lights have been lit.

“Each light shines as a tribute to a life lived, illuminates themes of remembrance, giving and sharing, symbolizes peace and good will and offers an opportunity to honor a special person or remember a loved one,” she says. “The lights and stars we hang on the trees remind us of those unexpected, miraculous glimmers of light that can appear in the darkest times of our lives, even as the evergreen tree reminds us that, even in the deadness of winter, life goes on in nature and in our hearts.”

“Light Up A Life: A Time for Remembering” tree lightings will take place at 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 6, Citizens Bank Rotunda, One Citizens Plaza, Providence, and 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, 864 Point Judith Rd., Narragansett. Each free program will feature music, thoughtful, inspirational readings and reception with light refreshments.
