Partnership to Bring Hospice Care
Closer to Home

PROVIDENCE, R.I., June 2008 – South County Hospital Healthcare System and Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island have teamed up to provide inpatient hospice care at two new suites recently constructed at the Hospital in Wakefield, RI.

“Our collaboration with South County Hospital illustrates an innovative strategy to optimize the care of individuals with life-threatening illnesses who require inpatient care,” says Analee Wulfkuhle, President & CEO of Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island. “The suites will accommodate individuals living in the South County area who need aggressive symptom management, pain control and psychosocial support and who want to stay close to home.”

Funded in part by South County Hospital Auxiliary, the new hospice suites are located on South County Hospital’s third floor in the new Frost Family Pavilion. Each home-like suite has a sleeper couch, refrigerator and flat screen television. A healing garden will be constructed in the family area outside each room. The large rooms are bright, airy and have a wonderful view of Point Judith Salt Pond, according to Barbara Seagrave, South County Hospital Vice President for Patient Care Services and CNO.

“Creating new inpatient hospice beds has been my pet project ever since we started developing our new inpatient units,” Seagrave said. “Before, we had to transfer hospice patients to Providence when the hospital was full, forcing families to make daily long trips to be with their loved ones. Now, we can offer hospice services close to where patients and their families live.”

“The response from our patients and families has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Gia Howard, Nurse Manager on Frost 3 at South County Hospital. “Our patients and families are truly the beneficiaries of this partnership.”
