Programs and Services

In providing coordinated hospice and palliative care aimed at helping people with serious illness maintain their identity, dignity and freedom from pain and anxiety, Hope Hospice RI offers a variety of programs and support services for patients and their loved ones. Individuals receiving hospice care have the option of choosing which services they prefer. Only nursing is required. Hope Hospice RI offers the following services:

Inpatient Hospice Care: When circumstances do not allow an individual at the end of life to remain at home, the patient may be transferred to Hope Hospice RI's Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, 24-bed unit that provides 24-hour individualized care and emotional support.

Palliative Care

Palliative care and the medical specialty of palliative medicine provide relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both you and your family. It is appropriate at any age and any stage in a serious illness and it can be provided along with curative treatment.

Joined in Care Advanced Dementia Program

Patient-centered care for individuals with advanced dementia that creates an environment with tools and activities to foster spiritual, emotional and physical comfort.

Bereavement Program

All Rhode Island individuals or families who have experienced a loss, regardless of whether they have an established relationship with Hope Hospice RI, are welcome to participate in the bereavement program. The program offers: individual and family counseling, a variety of support groups and specially designed services for children ages four to 17 including Camp BraveHeart, a two-day summer camp that focuses on helping children work through their grief.

Complementary Therapies

Volunteers from the Rhode Island community share their talents and skills to offer a number of complementary therapies for patients such as Reiki therapy, hand massage with aromatherapy, pet therapy and music therapy.

  • Reiki therapy is an ancient Japanese healing art of "laying on hands" which utilizes the power of touch to evoke deep peace and relaxation.
  • Hand massage with aromatherapy is provided to promote calmness, comfort and to reduce stress.
  • Pet therapy uses trained animals and certified handlers to provide patients, families and staff with comfort and companionship.
  • Music therapy is used to address pain and discomfort, produce comfort, induce sleep and provide an atmosphere of relaxation and calm for patients and families.

Physicians: Provide medical oversight for the plan of care of each patient and are all board certified in hospice and palliative care medicine.

Registered Nurses: Make regular patient visits and are highly trained and experienced in pain and symptom management.

Hospice Aides: Help with personal care, such as dressing, bathing and nail care.

Licensed Medical Social Workers: Assist patients and their families with emotional challenges, advance care planning and with navigating logistical issues, such as, funeral arrangements, insurance and medical costs.   

Chaplains: Provide spiritual support to help patients and family members cope with the significant spiritual issues that arise during a terminal illness. 

Grief Counselors: Help family members understand their loss and guide them through the grieving process.

Volunteers: Spend time with patients and offer assistance to family members when they need to take a break. Volunteers are available to read to patients, play cards, shop or do errands for a patient, visit bereaved families to offer emotional support, work on special events, provide office support.

  • End-of-Life Decision Guidance: Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island can help with talking about difficult issues that arise at the end of life. We can assist with advance care planning and help with funeral arrangements.
  • Medical Equipment Needs: Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island provides medical supplies, medications related to the terminal illness and equipment needed to manage the comfort and individualized needs of hospice patients in their homes.
    • Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island can arrange for the delivery of medical equipment, supplies and medication to help individuals adapt more easily to weakness, immobility and other changes related to the progression of the illness. 
    • Equipment may include hospital beds, walkers, wheelchairs, oxygen therapy supplies or bedside commodes.
  • Short-term inpatient and respite care.
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapy.
  • Education about care, the disease process and changes that may occur in the patient's condition.
  • Speakers' Bureau: Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island's Speakers' Bureau is a community resource providing speakers at no cost to clubs, organizations, faith-based groups, senior centers and other interested audiences. Trained staff are available to discuss a wide variety of hospice-related topics.
